Skagway Tours: Where do I catch the bus?
When you first disembark from your cruise ship in Skagway, you may be confused where your tour departs from. Depending on the Skagway tour you choose, you may depart from one of a number of locations. If you don’t have a tour booked, you may even just be looking for a way to get into town. This blog is all about getting around in Skagway, and where to find your bus when you book a tour.
The layout of Skagway – Three cruise ship piers
When you arrive in Skagway by cruise ship, you will dock on one of three piers. The southernmost pier is called the Railroad Dock. The middle pier is called the Broadway Dock. The northernmost pier is called the Ore Dock. A dock representative from your cruise ship will be able to tell you which pier you’re at, or you can wait until you disembark and ask a local.
After exiting your cruise ship, you will pass through a security checkpoint. The area Immediately after this checkpoint is where many independent tours pick up their guests. It is also where the local bus company, called SMARTbus, picks up passengers for a ride into town. Keep in mind that none of the piers are more than quarter-mile from downtown Skagway, so you may prefer to walk and save the $2.00 per person it costs for the short ride.
If you booked a tour through your cruise ship or independently, your ticket will show the time for the tour and the place they are going to pick you up. These directions may seem confusing, so let’s break down the most common locations for tour pickups.
What follows is a breakdown of the most common pickup locations if you purchased your tour off of your cruise ship:
- End of the Pier – This means you’re being picked up in the area just beyond the cruise ship security checkpoint.
- Alongside the Ship – This means that your bus or train is going to be parked right by your ship, so do not pass through security or you will have gone too far.
- Ashore – This means that you are being picked up just beyond the security checkpoint.
Most tour companies have a dock representative that will meet you at the appropriate time. They will be carrying a sign that identifies the company they work for. If you’re boarding the Skagway train, an announcement will be made when it’s time to board.
If you booked an independent tour with M&M Tours, you will get detailed instructions for pickup. We have locations at each dock that are easy to find and staffed with year-round locals. Once you check in, one of our sales agents will point out where you’ll be picked up for your Skagway Tour.
