Skagway Restaurant Review
The Skagway Brewing Company
If you live to be 80, that means you only get 29,200 days to enjoy life. A third of that time is going to be spent working and another third sleeping. That only leaves 19,272 days. Now consider how much time you spend in traffic, doing taxes, and going to the dentist, and there just aren’t a lot of days to really enjoy life. If you’re smart, you’re going to spend most of those days drinking beer.
The Skagway Brewing Company brews beer and cooks food
Substantial upgrades have been made to the dining area since the Gold Rush.
You read that right. So, you’re on vacation in Skagway and you want to get the most out of your day. If I told you that Skagway had a microbrewery where you could also get fish and chips or a tasty burger, you would probably say, “That cannot possibly be true because I am not that lucky.” Well, let me tell you, partner, your luck is about to change.
The Skagway Brewing Company is a locally owned business that also stays open during the winter months. If you’re the kind of tourist that says, “I like to support local business,” then you better go drink some locally brewed beer and eat some locally made food. If you don’t, you’re just trying to make yourself look like a decent person but we know the truth.
Let’s talk about the food first
I know you’re excited about the beer, but The Brew Co, as the locals call it, has a full menu with all sorts of homemade pub fare that will make you drool when you read the menu. Fortunately, the menus are wiped down and disinfected every single day. The only problem you’re going to have is narrowing down which menu item to choose.
The Brew Co is known locally for their handcrafted burgers. That’s a char-broiled chunk of ground beef on a bun with all of the stuff you like piled on top. You can get it with fries or tater tots because The Brew Co. understands that tater tots are delicious.
We’re talking about food but I’m thinking about beer.
I like to order the Buffalo-style hot wings because I’m a red-blooded American with good taste. Then I eat a Cobb salad because I only eat greens when they’re covered with meat and homemade bleu cheese dressing. For my main course, I usually get the halibut fish and chips but I may go crazy and get the special because they’re always awesome.
You see, the head chef at The Skagway Brewing Company creates everything from scratch. He makes these fantastic Mexican specials and does a prime rib night because this is Alaska and we have to eat prime rib once a week or we go soft and shave our beards. The head chef even made me hot dish one time and it was the only hot dish I ever ate that I liked. What is hot dish? It’s some Minnesota casserole thing with meat, canned soup, tater tots, and cheese. It’s like Shepard’s pie for people that think hockey is a real sport.
If you’re like me, you’re going to want to wash down your homemade burger with a few beers. You will have multiple styles to choose from because, if you didn’t catch it, the Brew Co. is a brewery. The most popular beer is the spruce tip ale. This is a beer made out of spruce trees. Sounds weird but it tastes good. I recommend drinking four just because you can.
The Brew Co. is moving to a new location in 2019, so I can’t really tell you much about the atmosphere but have I mentioned that they serve beer? If you’re in Skagway for the day, be sure to check out this local eatery and brewery, support local business, drink beer, and have no regrets in life.
Rating – 100 pints!
